Enlightened Riding has been developed from profound experiences and years of proven success by Barbi Breen-Gurley and Janet Emmons.

Barbi brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a trainer and competitive rider. Since obtaining her BHSAI from Moat House, England in 1970, she has taught dressage to students of all ages, abilities and riding goals. Many internationally known instructors such as Hilda Gurney, Robert Dover, Laurie Doyle, and Albrecht Heidemann, have helped Barbi develop her riding skills. Barbi has trained several horses to the Grand-Prix level and won numerous, state, regional and national championships. She is a USDF Bronze, Silver & Gold Medallist. She has twice been long listed with the US Equestrian Team and has been on the Developing Rider List four times.

Janet Emmons obtained her M.A. in English and Educational Specialist degree from the University of Iowa. She completed her M.S. in Psychology from California Polytechnic University. In her private practice, she has worked with many equestrians, helping them overcome fear, performance anxiety, low self-esteem, anger and other emotional blocks to their riding progress. She has trained with Barbi since 1986. Her own experiences as a therapist and rider helped her realize that dressage is a great metaphor of life. The challenges we face in riding, such as staying centered, improving our connection, and preparing for transitions have implications for the way we conduct our lives.

Paula Zima states that her mission is “to create delightful art for the world to enjoy.” She has done this through her illustration, public art, sculpture and paintings. She has been a dressage and horsemanship enthusiast for many years and credits Barbi for teaching her a firm foundation in the art of dressage.
